Just outside the wall is the Cosmopolitan New Town of Rhodes with its lively Mandraki Harbour. Impressive municipal buildings dating back to the Italian occupation are aligned on the seafront wheras modern shopping facilities and banks can be found in the smaller back streets. At night the air is filled with music from bars , clubs and live bands and there are restaurants to cater for any taste or pocket. At the northernmost end of the island, Rhodes Town has a big town beach stretching across the entire tip of the peninsula, with the Aquarium at its center. Hundreds of tourists and locals visit the beach daily, enjoying either the calmer sea on Elli beach or the waves on Psaropoula beach. It defies one's powers of imagination to conceive what this beach must have seen in all the years since the English writer Lawrence Durrell described it as the finest beach in the Mediterranean.
